I began this project in January 2001 as a series of self-portraits contributing to my own healing process.
As I came to realize the healing powers of art, I also became aware of the need for positive images of people healing. I decided to expand my project to include others.
Today I am working with over 20 survivors. My work with each survivor is unique. I ask each person to take control of their project - make it into something positive for him or her. Some want to be visible as a survivor in order to erase the shame and offer hope to other survivors who might view the series. Many choose to be photographed in places, with people, or doing activities that have been important in their healing process.
As we evolve, so does this project. Thank you for taking time to view "Faces of Survivors: Voices Reclaimed".
Best wishes,
Catherine
